Trinity’s fifth grade is always a happening place to be.
We bounce into Bible with a study of the Kings of Israel the first semester and the Kings of Judah the second semester. This study is enhanced with maps and diagrams. In addition to passing a quiz on each lesson, students complete written and illustrated applications which are bound together to create a keepsake notebook. Students are responsible for assigned memory work each grading period.
To keep us at the top of our game in math, we use the Harcourt Math series. Our focus is on place value and operations with whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Algebra is included in each of our units as well as problem solving. We also participate in a national competition, Math Fax.
We offer a “full court press” in Language Arts with grammar, reading, and spelling. While our language/grammar consists of a study of the parts of speech, it also incorporates writing, i.e. paragraphs, essays, research, and creative story writing. Our language publisher is Houghton Mifflin.
Reading offers us the opportunity to travel…both to places and back in time. We use the Houghton Mifflin basal reader as well as the Wordly Wise vocabulary series. We supplement these with several novels. These include Call It Courage by Armstrong Sperry, Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth Speare and Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. We are involved in numerous activities such as vocabulary, comprehension and discussion groups to complete our study of these great literary works.
Unbelievable! Our study of American History spans more than 500 years! We begin with the early civilizations and Native Americans. We move on to the European explorers and early European settlements in North America. Next, we take a look at the 13 original colonies, the American Revolution, the Constitution, growth of the United States, the Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, and finally, Reconstruction.
Our science book is published by Harcourt. The science curriculum provides an in-depth study of life, physical, and earth sciences. The life science includes a study of human and animal growth and development, plant adaptations and processes, interactions with nature, biomes, and preserving ecosystems. The study of earth science includes earth’s surface, resources, weather and climate, and exploring the oceans. Matter and its properties, atoms and elements, and energy and motion are encompassed in our study of physical science. Assessment is made through quizzes and tests. We also supplement our curriculum with hands on activities and teacher developed reviews such as power point presentations and “buzzer” games.
Meshed with our science and social studies are our three field trips:
